Sword Art Online Episode 06 has too many details, that’s why the summary and the explanation is a little longer than others. So, just bear with it an enjoy.
Summary of the Episode: In this episode of Sword Art Online: Alicization we see that Asuna asks Kikuoka about Kirito and where he is. Kikuoka explains to her that Kirito’s brain is damaged because of the poison used by Johnny Black. So, there treating his using an STL ( Soul Translator) machine where they will induce new neural networks to fix his brain. Then Asuna asks what’s the objective of the project and why they need Kirito. Kikuoka explains that they are trying to make an Artificial Intelligence, based on the human soul and their Fluctlight (Quantum field inside a brain is called Fluctlight). They invented Light Quantum Gate Crystal aka the Lightcube as a medium to copy human Fluctlight and they successfully replicate a human soul.
When Rinko learns about that she asks them if they are successful, why do they need her for? Then her previous colleague Higa Takeru explains and demonstrated what would happen to a copy of a soul by using his own artificial Fluctlight as an example. Asuna and Rinko both disgusted by that and asks how they solved the problem. Then Kikuoka explains to them that they used infant’s Fluctlight and first raised 16 soul archetypes infant souls by 4 Rath’s trainers inside of a VRMMO world, designed based on the virtual world program SEED left by Kayaba Akihiko.
Kikuoka also explains since time accelerates fast in the virtual world and at the time of their talk, at least 480 years passed and the capital city Centoria alone has more than 20 thousands residents. The residents of the capital city made a Church called Axiom Church and made some Taboo Index rules which forbid any crime like murder. Then Rinko asks if that’s the case what’s the problem.
Then Asuna instantly understands that Kikuoka want a AI that could murder and could also be used as a tool in a war. And that’s why they need a person like Kirito who has vast knowledge about virtual world and have experience in different situation and who can influence them to break the Taboo Index. They sent Kirito there as a child and blocked his real-world memory. Kirito influenced Alice and She broke the Taboo Index by trying to save some other girl in an restricted Area. Another coincidence is that the project is based on ALICE (Artificial Labile Intelligence Cybernated Existence in Short ALICE). If they could find Alice it will be a great leap forward in their research.
After a while later, Asuna and Rinko see Kirito and his nurse Aki Natsuki who is from SDF Nursing academy and was the old nurse of Kirito at Chiyoda ward hospital. Then she tells Kirito is well and his Fluctlight is active and she will take good care of him.
Then Rinko talks with Asuna about Kayaba Akihiko and her love affair with him. She explains to her that the chest bomb set up in her chest was to deceive the Government to save her from punishment because she looks after him. At first, after hearing what he did with Nerve-gear, she went to the mountain cabin in Nagano to kill him but she couldn’t and then looked after her.
Asuna tells her that she and Kirito never blamed her for anything and the days in Aincrad was the best day of her life with Kirito. So, they have to forget that and keep moving forward. Meanwhile, while Rinko is sleeping, she saw a dream about Kayaba and runs out of the room to find him and thinking was that a dream or not.
Asuna and Rinko talking with Kikuoka
Details Explanation of the Episode:
In this Sword Art Online: Alicization episode, Asuna asks Kikuoka about Kirito’s location and Soul Translator (STL) and why did he bring him to the Ocean Turtle. Then Kikuoka explains that the poison Johnny Black used damaged Kirito’s brain and can only be treated by Rath And STL Technology which will induce a new generation of neural networks to fix his brain. But it will take time and now he is inside a full spec STL machine, which can only be found at Rath.
After listening to him, Rinko Kojiro asks Kikuoka what’s happening here, and why an SDF official like him would use the ministry as a front to do the experiment. She also asks what is he plotting and for what he needs Kirito for.
Kikuoka asks if he tells her, will she join them? She says she will decide after listening to what he has to say. He then asks them how much did they know about the concept of STL. Asuna tells him that It’s a machine that reads a human soul and their Fluctlight and allows the user to dive into a virtual world indistinguishable from reality. Kikuoka says that’s correct but they don’t know the purpose and objectives of the project. He says that the main objective of the project is to create a bottom-up multipurpose Artificial Intelligence.
Asuna asks what is bottom-up multipurpose artificial intelligence. Then Kikuoka explains there are two approaches to develop artificial intelligence, one is top-down, where you program the artificial intelligence with experience and knowledge so that in the end it will learn to replicate true intelligence. Till now, every technique used in Artificial Intelligence is based on a top-down method including Dr. Shigemura’s AI. He also explains that the problem with top-down type is that it can’t react to situations it doesn’t learn or know about appropriately. In other words, they haven’t evolved into true intelligence.
Asuna Kikuoka Higa and Rinko talking about STL
Next, he explains that the bottom up artificial intelligence is based on the human brain and it involves artificially replicating the construct of biological organ compromised of one hundred billion linked brain cells and generating true intelligence in there. Then, Asuna ask is that possible? Kikuoka says that until now it was thought to be impossible but because of STL Technology’s ability to scan the soul and Fluctlight it now possible. He further explains that to store the same amount of data as a human, they have developed Light Quantum Gate Crystal aka the Lightcube as a medium for the Artificial brain. Rinko then asks Which means it can make a copy of Fluctlight? Then Kikuoka says that’s absolutely right and in fact, they succeed in replicating the human soul. Rinko gets surprised and asks if they are successful, why did they need her? Kikuoka says because foolishly enough they missed something in their findings, He explains that there is an unbelievably vast and deep chasm exist between a copy of the human soul and a true artificial intelligence.
Then He asks Higa to show her the problems. Then Higa Takeru sighs and shows her the copy of himself in the system and how it contradicts itself with the real Takeru and crashed itself in a minute and 8 seconds. Asuna and Rinko feel disgusted by that. Rinko tells him there is a limit to bad taste. Kikuoka says he is sorry but that the only way to show them the problem. He tells them that he copied fluctlight of over 10 people including himself but none of them could bear the thought of being a copy in the system and crash itself.
After that, Kikuoka asks Rinko if the full copy of an adult is out of the question then what should they do? Rinko answers they should raise a mind from the very start. He says that’s right. He explains that they used copied newborn infant baby’s Fluctlight and raise them. Rinko asks that in what kind of environment did they raised them because no one can make the exact copy of the real world. Kikuoka says that’s right and impossible too. But they realized that there are plenty of solutions already exists on the network in-form of VRMMO (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online) games. He further explains that they created some small village and surrounding landscapes and converted them for STL use by using the SEED program left by Kayaba Akihiko. At the very first town they created, four members of Rath stuff raised 16 souls archetype aka the AI infants to the age of 18. Those 16 grew up quickly. Though they are artificial Fluctlight, they are very obedient and upstanding. Then, when they were joined in marriage and they were given more of the AI infants, in other words, new soul archetypes to raise.
Kikuoka explains more that because of the accelerating time in their world by 5000, there was more and more generation of AI developed. By the 3 weeks time in the real world, 300 years passed in their virtual world and a massive society of 80000 has emerged. Rinko then says, that it became a simulation of a civilization. Kikuoka tells her that is true and at the time of their talking, 480 years have already passed in the virtual world and the population of Cerntoria the capital has reached 20,000.
Then Higa explains that at this time the artificial fluctlight have matured into bottom-up AI’s they are hoping for and they are very thrilled to move onto the next phase. But when moving to the next stage, they noticed a major issue. A governing body called the Axiom Church has created laws known as Taboo index in the virtual world. For example, it contains a law forbidding murder but as in the human world. Human often violates the law but fluctlight lights obey those laws excessively. And because if that the town is too perfect and too beautiful, there is not a garbage and no thief in the society. Needless to say, no murder has ever been committed in society. Then Rinko asks how is that an issue? But Asuna realized quickly that they want to build an AI that is capable of murdering people. So it can be used on the battlefield to kill enemy soldiers. That’s why an SDF official like him want that kind AI.
Rinko then asks is that true? Kikuoka explains to them that when Nerve-gear released, he understood that the technology has the potential to upend the very notion of war. So, when the SAO incident happened, he volunteered to transfer to the ministry and joined the tasks force. He did all that just to get this project off the ground. It took him five years to come this far. Then, Rinko asks Higa why did he join the project. He says her that his motives were a bit more personal. He was friends with a guy when he was a student at a college in Korea and he died while serving in the military. So, he thought even if the world never gets rid of war, at least people never had to die anymore if they succeed in their project. He knows that’s a childish reason but still, he wanted to do something.
Aki nursing Kirito In Chiyoda ward hospital
Asuna asks Kikuoka if they ever told that to Kirito. If they did, he will never agree to help them. Asuna then explains that they have a problem in their view because the Fluctlight have their rights because they have the same cognitive abilities as a human have. They have no physical body but they are same as a human. If Kirito knew that they will force them to kill or use them as a tool of war, he will never take part in their experiment. Kikuoka then says he understands what’s she saying but to him 100 thousand Artificial Intelligence is worth far less than a single SDF soldier.
Rinko then asks Kikuoka why did he need Kirito? Kikuoka explains to them that he came up with an experiment to determine why the artificial fluctlight lights are unable to disobey Taboo Index. To carry out this experiment they need a subject who was used to moving into the virtual world and experience amounting to years in the virtual world environment. He explains that they will block all the real human’s memories of him and revert him back to childhood and have him grow in the virtual world to see how he turn up and influence others. Then Asuna and Rinko understand that the needed Kirito to influence the AI.
Suguha, Liz, Shino-non, Silica and Asuna talking about Kirito and how he got involved into something like that in their guild house in Alfheim online game. Everyone asking Asuna is it alright to trust Kikuoka? They really hope that he is not hiding anything but for now, they have to trust the STL treatment will work. Then Liz and Shino-non asks Asuna what is Taboo index and did anyone get influenced by Kirito in the virtual world. Asuna explain there was a boy and a girl who us to play with Kirito, the girl broke the Taboo Index because she was influenced by him. Then she tells them that the law she broke was a law about accessing a Restricted Area. She tells other that Hage told them that they discovered another Fluctlight’s death in the girls view in the restricted area. Most likely she was trying to help her. In other words, this girl prioritized someone else’s life over Taboo index and that fascinated Asuna and got her into thinking how did she do something so human. Then she explains to others that it was precisely what they are looking for in an AI.
Then they ask Asuna if she had a name? She says the name is Alice and there is a coincidence because ALICE is the name of the concept that became the foundation of overall project. Asuna tells them that Kikuoka explains to them that ALICE is Short for Artificial Labile Intelligence Cybernated Existence. And the ultimate Goal of them is to convert an artificial Fluctlight into an ALICE. After all the explaining, Kikuoka welcomes Rinko to the Alicization Project.
Asuna then explains to the group that if Kirito save Alice, Rath’s research would have make a huge leap forward. Then she tell them because of the accelerated time in the virtual world, they didn’t notice about Alice for two days. And by that time Axiom Church fixed Alice’s Fluctlight. Shino-non then asks how could an AI can fix Fluctlight? Asuna tells them that normally it’s not possible but they found a loop hole in the system and they use it as sacred art to access different system access rights in the form of magic.
Asuna then tells Suguha and others that she has to go because they will let her see Kirito sleeping in the machine. They told her to let them know about Kirito’s conditions. She tells them that he is inside a machine, so she might not see his face.
Then Asuna and Rinko saw Kirito inside the STL machine. While watching him, they met Kirito’s Nurse Aki Natsuki who tells them about 6 other STL machine and two of them are in Roppongi. Asuna noticed that Aki was the nurse at Chiyoda ward hospital where Kirito was admitted. Then Asuna asks Aki is she nurse or pretending like Kikuoka was? She tells them of course, she is a nurse but she passed her nursing degree from Tokyo Self Defense Force higher school of nursing and she is a Sergeant first class officer. She pledges to protect Kirito with all costs. Asuna tells Aki that she is counting on her. Then Asuna asks if Kirito is coming back. Aki says, of course, Kirito’s fluctlight is vital and active inside the machine’s treatment program. Besides he is the hero who cleared the SAO.
Rinko wants to have a chat with Asuna about SAO. She explains to her that as everyone knew, during SAO incident she and Kayaba Akihiko was hiding in the mountains of Nagano. She tells Asuna that she had a micro-bomb implanted in her chest, because of that she was forced to collaborate with him on the project. But that was all not true. She was aware that the bomb will never go off because it was implemented in her to deceive the government, so she wouldn’t be charged with any crimes. It was the only present Kayaba given her in their relationship.
Rinko and Asuna talking about Kayaba Akihiko and SAO
She explained to her that by the time Kayaba got into Toto Institute of Technology, he was already head of development at Argus. But she didn’t know anything about that. All she saw was a scrawny kid who was shut-in and immersed in research. She got him outside for a walk but they’re he thinks how to emulate the feeling of natural light on the skin in the virtual world. She began dating Kayaba but he never pushed her away because of some unknown reason she couldn’t figure out.
But later she understood, she was the who didn’t understand anything about him. When she learned about Kayaba’s crime, she went to his mountain lodge to kill him. But she couldn’t kill him. When he sees her, he says what he is going to do with her like he always does. Then he goes back to Aincrad. Rinko is crying thinking about that. Then Asuna tells her that nor she or Kirito ever blamed her for any of that. In fact, she is not even sure if she holds a grudge against Kayaba Akihiko. It’s true that many people lost their life but the day she spent with Kirito in Aincrad, was the best day of her life. She says as commander (Kayaba) did something wrong, so did she and Kirito and Rinko too. But it’s not as if they could make amends even if they were punished for it. It could be that they are never forgiven but still, they have to move on. Then they left and go to their own room.
As Rinko was sleeping, she hears someone saying ”what I am going to do with you? Coming all the way here?” then she wakes up and looks for the person and thinking is that a dream………..
